This painting has a significant importance for me. The people
in the boat are my close friends and fellow Canyon travelers. Brian Dierker
is at the oars of his now famous dory the "Rainbow Bridge".
Kirk Burnett is playing his banjo, my old friends Jim Weatherill and
George Steck are reading their books. Indecently, George Steck passed
away last spring. He was a great guy, loved the canyon and we traveled
down the river together several times.
The view is looking down river towards the great Nankoweap delta. It
is early evening and the light is doing its magic across the entire surface.
A beautiful moment on a beautiful boat on a beautiful river. These men
are the new kind of river travellers.
If John Wesley Powell could see this scene he would shake his head in
disbelief with an approving smile spreading across his face.

A 6-mile hike from the South Rim via the Bright Angel Trail, this
view at Plateau Point is, in my own opinion, one of the best and most easily
accessible vistas in the park. The Colorado River is in lower left. The
Zoroaster Temple is on horizon center right and the Brahma Temple is on
horizon center left. |
